“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
- Maimonides
My Teaching Philosophy:
Growing up, I had a plethora of teachers who had many different teaching styles. There were teachers that lectured, teachers that shared knowledge, and then there were teachers made me think. Think about the world around me. Think about how a situation might affect someone who didn’t live the same life as I did. Think about how I might impact the world around me. They made me realize that learning wasn’t just memorizing facts and putting them to use, but rather that it was about being able to think situations through to understand on multiple levels. As a teacher, I realized that I don’t want to just be a teacher that shares facts with my students while they are in school. I want to be a teacher that helps my students to think so that they may become life-long learners.
As a teacher, I want my students to understand that there are many different ways to learn and just because they do not learn the same way as their peers, doesn’t mean that they are lacking, but rather that they just have different abilities when it comes to learning. To help each student understand this, it is important to understand what motivates students or why there is a lack of motivation. Motivation is essential because learning is not always straightforward. The students will be confronted with their own difficulties on their path to knowledge, whether it is in what they are learning or how they are learning. My goal as a teacher is to be support for my students as they are on their educational journey. To do this, I will strive to provide a welcoming environment that the students feel comfortable in and in which they can be successful.
In employing an assortment of teaching strategies and tools, I hope to help and meet the needs of all of my students and to engage my students in what they are learning. To do this, I will work to differentiate my lessons to help all of my students be successful to the best of their abilities. This can be done through experiential learning and exploration activities. Through this, the students will hopefully be able to make connections in their learning between the classroom and everyday life.
Together with families, other teachers, professionals, and the community, I hope to support my students and motivate them to explore and grow in their learning in all aspects of their lives so that they may be successful, life-long learners.
